Chapter History

Since 1978 there had been a strong interest in establishing a chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at Winthrop.  However, there was a strong opposition from the Winthrop Administration who felt there were not enough black males to support another black Greek fraternity. Hence, on February 7, 1981 these twelve men were initiated into the Scroller's Club:

Shaw Boyd

Reginald Brunson

Vincent Coleman

Woodrow Hayes

Fredrick Knight

Finley O’Neal

Timothy Peay

Vincent Pearson

Charles Thompson

Henry Watkins

Michael Wilmore

Robert Wilson

The Rock Hill Alumni Chapter and the Zeta Epsilon Chapter were very instrumental in guiding these Scrollers through their pledge period and they were initiated into the Zeta Epsilon Chapter of University of South Carolina on April 4, 1981.

The Grand Board of Directors of the National Headquarters of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. adopted on June 13, 1981 the degree for an establishment of a chapter in the name of Lambda Gamma to Winthrop College.

On January 22, 1982 the twelve newly initiated brothers assembled at Bannon Hall in Rock Hill, South Carolina to receive their charter from past SouthEastern Province Polemarch Melvin T. Solomon.
